Adv 4. The Germans drive fast and on the other side of the road

Tue Jan 24
well another huge flight on the wonderful Singapore Airlines today. 12 hours to Frankfurt, Germany. I think Singapore has one of the best airports, in the world very fancy, nice warm inviting atmosphere. and they have a place where there are foot massage machines, so you can just sit there and get a brilliant foot
massage while you wait to board, soooo good!!!! Frankfurt airport is really clinical and harsh, to compare the two airports would be like jumping on white fluffy clouds with angels and then falling and landing in a place were there is no smiling allowed, no retail relaxation and keeping vigilant alert of the customs people in scary german military uniforms.

I was so tired!! It was so weird to hear everyone speaking in German, all the si
gns are in German, i dont understand anything. I only just made it onto a train to Augsburg, after pronouncing it wrong several times when trying to get a ticket. i didn't fancy trying to find a hostel in Frankfurt. I HATE trains, so tired, so sick. i got to Augsburg finally... woke Ka up when i rang her to come pick me up from station, cos i arrived a day early. YAY!! so good to see her, but it is soo freezing here.

Wed Jan 25
While i am in Germany I hope to learn a bit of the language, and see some really cool cathedrals and eat some german food. Today Ka and I walked around the Augsburg shops a bit, all wrapped up in big jackets, with hats and gloves, i would say this town is really quaint the side streets are all cobble stoned and the buildings are small and have vines growing up the walls. They drive on the other side of the road!!! It is doing wierd things to my internal bearings We went to St Mary's Cathedral, was quite cool, early Gothic architecture, really amazing intricate paintings and decoration, and we had coffee in a cool German cafe. German/Barvarian dumpling for dessert :)

Thur Jan 26

Today we drove to Neuschwanstein Castle (Nu- sshwan- stine). It was about an hour and a half drive, we got a little lost though.... Snow is covering everything, so white and they sky is always grey. I had a butter pretzel for lunch, quite good, chewy... i would recommend. Apparently this is a very very famous castle. King Ludwig II built it only about 150 years ago, he only lived in it 172 days before he died mysteriously at 40 years of age. I think he was murdered, and he was insane. It is the castle design that the Disney Castle is based on. The castle was never finished, still about 80 unfinished rooms and nobody has lived in it since then, but it is set up for tours etc. The rooms that we went into were very beautiful, byzantine type religious murals covering everything, lots of gold. and very colourful. I went to youth group with Ka and her friends, it was all German, except we sang some English songs. I fell asleep! EXTREME jet lag.

This is what speed we got up to on the autobaan (motorway) If you cant see that, its 180 km/h and the temperature is -5deg at midday.

ok, this amused me a lot.
at every off ramp on the autobaan
is an ausfahrt sign (ows - fart). it doesnt translate as exit, but offramp, but theres never any clear sign telling you where it goes to...

Fri Jan 27

I did a little more shopping and looking around, Ka's homegroup was in German. Its hard not being able to understand the German language, I feel very overwhelmed sometimes. It is not that common for Germans to speak much English even though they learn it at school, some of these people find me quite amusing, its odd for them because i cant understand them, and some jump at the chance to try out their english, some think my accent is cool. Well thats wierd because our accent is awful according to some singaporeans, and i think i agree upon hearing them trying to imitate it! Its certainly not as graceful as the British accent.

Sat Jan 28

This morning I went with Ka to her friends 18th birthday brunch, it was really cool. well it was just lots of food and people, nothing big. Germans celebrate the 18th birthday, it is more important than the 21st. Quite differnt from us, who make a huge deal out of our 21st's. There was lots of breads and cheeses and spreads, Germans like lots of bread and pasta. I really like butter pretzels and i also like quark (kind of a yoghurt cheese type spread) We went to a nightclub in the evening. All i can say is German cigarette smoke stinks really really bad. Quite awful...enough to enduce vomiting! And the music was dreadful, and there were so many people. It is not like dunedin where you can bar hop if you dont like the people or music, because the clubs arent that close together and you have to pay to get in.

Sun Jan 29
Well i went to a German church this morning, it was quite intersting, though i didnt understand it. They sing the same songs as we do back home, except in German of course, so i sang the english versions :0 And now i am on a train to paris, where i am meeting lucy and jono. It is an 8hr trip. But it is quite intersting to see the countryside, the towns are really cute and snuggly. the snow is starting to melt in some places, i hope this means spring is coming soon. im lucky to be getting two springs this year!

Adv 3. The crazy people of Singapore

Fri 20 Jan
Well the press conference for tonight got cancelled :( so thats a bummer. Never mind.

I caught a hop on,hop off bus and went around the city, did a little shopping, looking around for some good laptop deals.

Singapore is really little so it doesnt take very long to see everything. its smaller than Otago, but 4 million people live here!! If you think of Dunedin's shopping centre and multiply it by at least 300 then you have Singapore shopping. These people love shopping and they love food
!!! Shops are open till late every day, some malls are open 24 hours. These people are crazy, and its not like the shops are quieter in the middle of the night when people are supposed to be in bed, but in fact they are busier.

When i was here last time i tried many differnt foods, the people living here are mostly a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian, but of course there are other asian's here as well. My favourite food here is Indian Prata and Teh Tarek. Prata is like a tough pancake with many differnet fillings like egg,or cheese of chocolate or anything you like, and Teh Tarek is tea, that they make a special way, by heating it and pouring it from up high to cool it down a bit and put air
in it. Its quite sweet and tastes good!!!

Sat Jan 21
Ive been watching Singaporean television at the Hotel that im staying at. The Gallery Hotel, where i painted one of the rooms, they were kind enough to let me stay here for free!! I walked along the river to a Funan mall, it has lots of electronics etc.

I bought a laptop today, a very nice, enthusiastic Chinese man made a very convincing sale!! He copied his favourite song onto for me, 'Drop it like it Hot' by snoop dogg, and he did a funny song and dance for me, if you can imagine a middle aged chinese man singing and dancing to black rap with funny English you can imagine it was quite amusing!!!
I went to a hotel bar to watch a football game with Hasan, a guy i met from CYX, him and his friends are football crazy, they support Arsenal, but sadly they lost that night....

Sun Jan 22
Today i met Eugene and Huong for lunch, it was good to catch up with them, they are cool. Eugene is a Singaporean Chinese guy, we were partners in the CYX finals. Huong is Vietnamese, she is studying in Singapore, such a cutey!! (thats her and I in opp. photo)
I couldnt really catch up with anyone else they were all working very hard at school!!! Design and architecture students work very hard here, puts us to shame really.
I went out with Hasan and his friends to a seafood villiage for dinner. We drove across the border into Johor Baru, Malaysia to eat some food and then drove back again.
It was quite a differnt country from Singapore, there are no slums in Singapore... road conditions aren't brilliant there, Singapore has the lowest crime rate in the world...
The seafood villiage was a new experience i tried some things i had never tried before!!!
And now i have a Malaysian stamp in my passport :)

Mon Jan 23
Today i had to check out of the hotel, so i slept on Hasan's couch, because he lives right by the airport. He lives in a condominum villiage. i watched myself on the Arts Channel for the Chronicles of the CYX. It was like reality tv, showing us working on the rooms during the competition, so that was fun :)

Adv 2. An Adventure to Remember

Im going to EUROPE!!! What an adventure this will be!! I have two must see places on earth.
One: Rome, the capital of ancient art
Two: New York, the capital of modern art
so it is brilliant that i will get the chance to go to Italy and explore the ancient wonders of the world. :)

Thur 19 Jan
Today me and my parents got up very early to drive 5 hours to christchurch. They were kind enough to drive me to the airport, to see me off on my big trip to europe!!!

I am very much loking forward to being in Europe and exploring a little of the different countries and cultures. I'll have a couple of weeks to do some travelling before i have to be in holland to start school. This trip is a bit of an insane one really. I wanted to come overseas and not just be a tourist but to get invovled in something so i could get to know a place and its people. So an exchange programme is perfect, i'll be studying at the Utrecht School Of Art for one semester,
I'm not here for very long though, only 4 and a half months, because its my graduating year i need to produce concise, resolved work and a lot of it, and get back home quickly. In amongst a lot of hard work i will make sure to galavant all over europe and make the most of being here.

So, well here i am on a 10 hour flight to Singapore where i will stay for 5 nights on a stopover. My goals for this stop are to catch up with some people that i made friends with when i was here last time for CYX. To buy a really good laptop for a good price, because Singapore is great for cheap electroncs. There will be a CYX press conference and we'll be on tv for the first episode of the Chronicles of CYX.

I am flying Singapore Airlines, and ive decided they are far superior to Air NewZealand. They give you a hot facecloth at the start and end of the journey!!! very hospitable. and you get your own tv screen and can choose between so many movies and tv programmes to watch and music to listen to. There are heaps of games and you can learn differnt languages. I tried to learn a little dutch... it made my head hurt... but i can count to 20 now. i couldn't find a Dutch phase book anywhere before i left NewZealand, so im hoping that when i get to Holland i wont need to speak much. I hear Dutch is one of the hardest languages to learn and that Holland is one of the most boring places in Europe, well its good that i wont be there for too long...
